Apple Launched Apple Pay Later. Can Malaysians enjoy the “Buy Now Pay Later” Service?

In the recent Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple announced the Buy Now Pay Later service called Apple Pay this week. Together with the reveal of Apple’s iOS 16 operating system, Apple Pay Later will let customers split up the cost of eligible transactions into four installments across six weeks.

Apple Pay Later will initially be limited to United States customers with the goal of expanding to more regions. Malaysians can prepare ourselves now to know whether the platform may suit our financial needs when it does hit our shores. Apple Pay Later will be made available at any payment points where Apple Pay is accepted, both online and offline stores.

Just like the name suggests, Apple Pay Later take on Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) services represents Apple’s second meaningful step into the world of financial products and services, following the introduction of the Apple Card in 2019.

When Will Apple Pay Later Come To Malaysia?

For now, Apple Pay Later is only slated for a launch in the USA. It is not yet clear if or when Apple may look to bring it to other markets, such as Malaysia. In order to issue financial products like the Apple Card to customers in overseas markets, Apple would either need to launch its own local banking branch or partner with an existing financial institution.

All this is to say that Apple Pay Later might be launching with iOS 16, but probably isn’t coming to other markets anytime soon, this is because; if we’re using the Apple Card as an indicator, local Apple fans may want to hold on to their expectations.
